Los Angeles Food: Pitfire Artisan Pizza

Los Angeles Food:  Pitfire Artisan Pizza
by Victoria Challancin

Pitfire Pizza Co

12924 West Washington Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90066-5122

This branch of the Pitfire Artisan Pizza chain opened in January near my son's home.   Rustic, fire-singed pizza  from a wood-buring oven mixes with  other handcrafted, market-driven food as an example of what can be done with simple, fresh, well-prepared ingredients.  Even the pepperoni, prosciutto, and bacon are made from sustainable-raised animals, minimally processed.

Farmer's Market Roasted Organic Vegetables with Grilled Bread and Caponata (the best caponata I've ever tasted!)

This picture doesn't do justice to this lovely, fresh dish:  Angel Hair Pasta with Crab, Fresh Corn, Fennel, Yellow Squash in a White Wine-Butter Sauce, topped with Summer Herbs.  A daily special.

Hand Chopped Salad.  What makes it special?  The slivers of pickled pepperoncini...

And the Pies!  The Pies!  The Pizza Pies!

Squash Blossom  Pizza with Squash Blossom Flowers, Fire-Roasted Zucchini and Yellow Squash, Goat Cheese, and Fresh Mint

The Burrata Pie:  Burrata Cheeese, Tomato Sauce, Wild Arugula, Caramelized Onion, Hazelnuts, and Pesto Drizzle

Heirloom Tomato Pizza with Ricotta and Sweet Basil Cabernet Vinaigrette

Steak Panini with Marinated Hanger Steak, Grilled Onion, Tomatillo Salsa, Avocado, Arugula, and Mozzarella

To drink?  Vintage Cane Sugar Sodas, Iced Teas, and House Made Seasonal Lemonades (I tried one with Watermelon!).

I would have taken photos of the Organic Vanilla Soft SErve Ice Cream from the Straus Family Creamery in Marin County---but we ate them too quickly!  With House Made Caramel Sauce and Maldon Salt, Scharffen Berger Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce, and Organic Extra Virgin Oil with Maldon Salt.

Wherever I go, they quietly beckon.  And Los Angeles is no exception.

A bit of old-fashioned whimsy with my Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich from Johnny Rockets

Do I miss my Mexican comfort food when I'm away from home?  Not in LA!

Is every conceivable type of cuisine available in LA?  You bet.  Here is a yellow Thai vegetable curry from LA Vegan.
